Embrace Identity-Based Transformation for Lasting Habit Change

Have you ever wondered why sticking with a new habit can be so challenging? It’s not just about motivation; it’s about who you believe you are. For lasting change, it isn’t enough to just alter your actions — you need to shift your identity.

Welcome to this installment of the UR Unburdened series. I’m Almira Hinton, the RN health coach and creator of the podcast "Nurses Notes by Almira," available on Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, and Spotify.

Understanding Identity-Based Transformation

Today, we are diving deep into a concept that can make or break your wellness journey: identity-based transformation. This isn’t about willpower; it’s about becoming the version of you that no longer needs to try so hard. So, are you someone who tries to be healthy, or are you someone who is healthy? This small distinction is everything. When you identify as a healthy person, your actions naturally follow. You make nourishing food choices not because you have to, but because that’s what a healthy person does.

The Thermostat Analogy

Think of your identity like a thermostat. If it's set at 68 degrees, any spike in temperature gets corrected until it's back to 68 degrees. If you identify as inconsistent, then even after a burst of motivation, you’ll default back to inconsistency. This phenomenon is quite common, especially at the beginning of New Year when resolutions often fade away by mid-January because the identity hasn’t shifted.

A Four-Step Method to Shift Your Identity

 1. Be Specific About Who You Want to Be

Decide who you want to be. Make it specific: “I am someone who walks daily.” Being specific about healthy behaviors helps cement your new identity.

2. Stack Small Wins

Each aligned action is a vote for your new identity. You don’t need to be perfect; you just need a majority win. Start with small wins and build up.

3. Use Identity-Based Affirmations

Affirm your commitment to yourself: “I am the kind of person who follows through.” This reinforces that you do what you set out to do and builds self-integrity.

4. Watch Your Language

Stop saying, “I can’t stick to anything” or “I’m just not consistent.” Retire these stories. Instead, say, “I always do my best for myself and stick with choices that benefit my health.”

Harnessing the Subconscious Mind

Consider using hypnosis and meditation. These techniques can access the subconscious mind, where your identity resides. We can untie outdated beliefs and replace them with ones that support your vibrant, healthy identity. Meditation further reinforces this identity until it feels second nature.

 Building a Supportive Environment

Find a community, join a women’s group or mastermind, or seek out a mentor or coach. These supports can ease you into becoming the healthiest version of yourself. Changing behaviors isn’t easy if you’ve never learned them. Therefore, a supportive tribe or community is invaluable.

 Reflecting on Your Identity Shift

Take a moment for reflection: What identity do you need to release, and which one do you need to embrace today to become the healthiest version of you? Journal your thoughts and shifts.
